Background Knowledge

The history of Acupuncture therapy can be traced back 4,000 to 10,000 years.  The
technique used for substance abuse and over- eating has successfully flourished in the past
several decades.  Ear acupuncture was recorded in a book in China about 2500 years
ago.  Based on this knowledge, in the 1950’s,  a French neurologist, Paul Nogier, discovered

that the human auricle represents the whole body surface and visceral structure in
a sompatotopic organization that resembles an inverted fetus.  The head is represented by
the ear lobe and the feet are represented near upper helix.  Around the orifice of the outer
ear the internal organs such as heart,  liver and stomach are represented.  If an abnormal
or pathological condition exists in any part of the body,  it will be reflect on the corresponding

area of the auricle as a sensitive “point”.  By stimulating the point,  the abnormal condition

can be reduced or corrected.  Anatomical studies have revealed that there are nerves on the

auricle which directly link to the brain,   such as a brunch of the vagus nerve. Dr. Dong has

performed research on ear acupuncture and its effect on cardiovascular performance on animal

model which verified others’ research findings.

Ear acupuncture has been used for pain control,  gallbladder stones,  motion sickness,  insomnia,

depression,  PMS,  Menopause syndrome,  weight control and substance abuse such as smoking

addiction,  alcohol addiction, or sugar craving etc.

Smoking Cessation Procedure

Among above list conditions,  Smoking cessation is used most often in the clinical practice,  because

it seems most effective.  Originally,  to treat this condition, acupuncturists will put needles on the

ear,  leave in  the ear for a few days or a week,  then take the needles out.  But in the recent 10

to 20 years,  people found out that sometimes,  this may cause infection on the auricle.  Since

the main   structure of the auricle is made of cartilage, which is avascular tissue, it is difficult for

antibiotics to reach the infected site.  So to get ride of the infecion become very hard . But some
acupuncturists still do it this way.

Ttry to avoid this problem,  Dr. Dong created a new technique in which he inserts a few needles in

the selected body points, leaves the needles in the points about 15 to 30  minutes,  then takes

needles out,  putting some herb seeds on the ear points.  The seeds are held on the ppoints by

small pieces of adhesion tape.  With this combination of body points and ear points,   Dr. Dong

has achieved a very high success rate of smoking cessation and gives patients a peace of mind,

without worry of ear infection.

To find active points on the ear,  Dr. Dong uses a small probe, which has a tiny ball on the
tip, to search for a certain area on the auricle.  The ball is set on a spring to insure equal pressure

while pressing the tip on the surface of the ear . One point will feel more sensitive or a little sting.

You should let Dr. Dong  know immediately,  usually,  the point is the point we are
looking for.  Then Dr. Dong will put a very small herb seed on a piece of small adhesion
tape and tape the seed on this point.  Dr. Dong will put 3 or 4 seeds on the ear.

At home,  you should periodically apply gentle pressure to the seeds to provide continuous

stimulation for maximum effect.  Ears are alternated with each treatment.

Patient Responsibility

The treatment is performed once a week.  Seeds remain on the ear for 5 to 7 days.  You
can take the seeds off by yourself.  Return for re-treatment on the 7th day.  Smoking cessation

usually can be achieved in 3 or 4 treatments.  Substance abuse or sugar craving may
need a few more times.  For weight control, if weight loss continuous,  treatment continue

until desired weight is reached.   Try to protect seeds from dropping off the ear,  especially

when showering,  a plastic bag may be used to cover the ear.  If seeds should drop off
before 4 days,  no matter how many seeds fall,  you should come back to the office to let
Dr. Dong put them back.  Do not attempt to put them back by yourself,  placement on the
precise point is critical and it is impossible to do by yourself’.
Press each seed at least 6 times daily. Each time, put your finger tip on one seed
and gently press down until you feel a little pain. Then hold the seed down at the pres-
sure you are  using for about 30 seconds,  lift your finger, Follow the same procedure with
each of the seeds.  If you do not feel pain when you press the seed,  you need to adjust
the direction of the pressure slightly until you feel the pain.  Repeat 6 times a day.  Also
press on the seeds when you have a desire or are actually smoking, drinking or eating,
You may feel the desire fade and the taste may become annoying.

Attention

1. Sometimes, you may gradually feel a seed hurt ear more and more, even when
you don’t touch it.  Usually this happen to one seed,  just simply take that seed off.

2.  Some patient may start to feel little dizzy after seeds are on for a while.  Since
you do not know which one cause the dizziness,  you should take all seeds off.

3.  In past many years Dr. Dong practice the technique,  one patient got an allergic re-
action either from tape or seeds;  She started to feel little itching on the ear and

got some rash on that side of the face.  After she took seeds off for a while,  every
thing recover to normal.  If same thing happens to you,  you should also take
seeds off immediately ..

4.  You may feel at times that your mouth is watery or a slightly strange  taste on your
tongue.  If these do not bother you too much,  you should keep the seeds in place
to get good effect.

Additional Information

Ear acupuncture is also used for many other different kind of conditions, such as

depression,  insomnia,  PMS,  motion sickness and pain control.  All these can be
achieved by putting herb seeds on the points.  Depending on the specific situation,

Dr. Dong may chose either body acupuncture or auricular therapy for the
best benefit of the patient.  Any way,  we wish all patients good luck for their effect
whichever treatment they get.

4.  ACUPUNCTURE AND FACE LIFTING

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE
Acupuncture therapy originated in China about 5 to 10 thousand years ago. It
has been successfully used for treatment of many different illness and conditions.
About 1000 years ago, Chinese doctors started to use acupuncture therapy to do
face lifting, which made people’s faces look tender, healthier and younger.
According to Chinese medical theory, the face is the window which reflects the
condition of the health of the whole body. So, if some one just tries to treat their face
but pays no attention to their whole body’s health, she or he can never maintain the
beauty of the face. But if somebody only does exercises of the muscle, not put attention

on their face, the skin, on the face will fade as fast as leaves in the fall. So
the best way to maintain the beauty of the face is to pay attention to’both the whole
body and skin of the face. The record of increased body strength
through the use of acupuncture therapy can be traced back in the book which written
2500 years ago, and the record of the use of acupuncture to do face lifting can be
traced back about 1000 years. Ever since the development of human
society, people have put more and more attention the beauty of everything,
including their face. The young, tender, healthier looking face often reflects the
degree of how much someone loves their life and their life style. As the
expectations increase, the way to search for better chemical synthesized cream and
natural methods to maintain the beauty of the face expanded. Of course, after trying
all synthesized cream without satisfaction, m~te and more people turned their
intYfye,st onto natural method of beauty
enhancement. Acupuncture face lifting
technique become more widely used and
effect getting better and better.

to replenish face, you have to treat all Yahg
meridians, especially stomach meridian.
T,he treatment will choice more poit1ts~an
stomach meridian. According to modern
research, a lot of points, especially the
points on the neck can increase carotid
art~rx!blood flow which supply blood on
the face and brain. In this office, DeDong
treated quite a few patients for ‘face
lifting, almost everybody noticed improve-
ment of the skin condition on their face by
an=average of 10 treatment. The earliest
and most prominent change is on, check
area, some patient could notice markedly
change after only 4 treatments. All patients
experienced same feeling of increased
smoothness and tighterness of the skin on
the ‘,il’ce, but also .the whole body fe.lt
better harmony and Increased energy=This
isstrong indication that acupuncture
treatment doesn’t only treat face, but
simultaneously treat the whole body.
That’s why acupuncture face lifting is
much-mere preferable. Plus, there is no
any’side-effect upon completion of the
acupuncture treatment.
THE TREATMENT PROCEDURE
The experienced acupuncturist will
evaluate the patients’ general health
condition first, this will includes simply
checking the pulse and blood pressure

as well as general history inquiry.
Acupuncture has no side-effects which
makes it possible for almost all patients
to receive acupuncture treatments. The
best acupoints will be choiced first for
individual patients according to their
bodies condition, and the skin will be
sterilized with 70% alcohol the very fine
(as thin as hair) deposable needle will be
inserted into certain points. Usually there
is no pain involved. Most patients are
unaware that the needles have been
inserted. After this, most patients will start
to feel very r relaxed, and they are asked
not movefor about 20 minutes lay on
treatment table while needles are inside
points. 20 minutes later, all needles will
be withdraw and after lay down there
relax for 3 more minutes, patients can
stand up and go home.
There is no special care needed after
treatment, patients can keep their normal
schedule, .. But we do prefer that patients
come in with some food in their stomach,
which ca~’m~ke effects even better. Don’t
come in=with empty stomach, this
sometime make patients feel dizzy
during or after treatment. There is no
specific requirement for certain food
avoid, but as usual, the very spicy and
stimulated food such as hot pepper, black
pepper etc., is not preferable. Which are
believed to be harsh on their skin.
Most often, as their preference, they
will also give some Chinese herb which
can enhance the treatment effect and make
their whole body stronger.
First 2 or 3 visits will be closer,
usually every 3 or 4 days, after that, visits
wi II be spread to once a week.

Sometimes, if patients have more than one
condition such as face wrinkles with
anxiety, or lack of energy of the whole body,
or insomnia, or depression, or menopause
syndrome. It is possible to treat all these
problem simultaneously. Because these
problems are really closely related. So,
one trip yields 2 or 3 benefits.
Acupuncture face lifting doesn’t excludes
the use of cream on the face. The good
cream combined with acupuncture treatment
will produce the best and fastest effect,
Acupuncture face lifting has no gender or
age limitation, it can beneficial to men and
